add: If you can't afford a security system, you could try those Wireless Door/Window Sensors.
Hadn't really thought of a mirror, to be honest, but that would be as much trouble (and possibly as expensive) as the solution that DigitalTNT found, which was this: http://www.amazon.com/45142-Choice-Alert-Wireless-Control-Center/dp/B0013V1T2I
The mirror has the disadvantage of being hard to see, especially if it is raining outside, needing a good location to mount it (that is in sight of both the gate and the sliding door) and not being useful at night.
