I bought a UV lamp (old style with 9w bulbs) on Amazon for $45ish dollars but that was a large one where you can put both your hands at a time. In retrospect, I would get a LED UV lamp instead (LEDs last much longer and are much cheaper to replace) and get a smaller lamp because it only takes a couple minutes to cure the gel anyway so I'd rather pay less and have the smaller lamp. I have seen such small LED lamps at drugstores, Target and Walmart for about $30. Now the gel top coat, I got the Gelish one again on Amazon for $11. It works great. Just make sure that:

  • All the layers of base coat and polish are very dry. I have read that using a Gel top coat over regular polish that is not completely dry makes it wrinkle. I hasn't happened to me yet but I give it a couple hours to be sure.

  • The gel seems very thin and watery when applied so don't overload the brush and be careful not to get some on your cuticles because it's not easy to get that off once it's cured. Do make sure to wrap the tips for true long-lasting power.

  • Soak a cotton ball with some rubbing alcohol (I used 90% but have read 70% is fine) and rub on your nails with a bit of pressure when they come out of the lamp.

This works fantastic on foil, as I said, but also will add some serious lasting power to any manicure. How long depends on how much you abuse your nails. I do 1 manicure a week, typically, and never get any chipping without using the gel top coat. I'm sure I could double or triple that with it but since I like to change my manicure weekly, so far I only use the gel for foil (and will also for going on vacation).

    Good luck!

I used Gelish Top It Off and Manimanimoo peel-off gel base coat. This is my last try with this peel-off coat. It damages my nails as much as peeling off a regular base coat – no matter how much I soak it. ☹

Born Pretty Pure Spring Gel in PP42 Meet You. It’s light pink color. I’m wearing three coats. I was able to set it in 30 seconds with thin layers.

On my Ring Finger, I used Born Pretty Mirror Dust Powder. It’s gorgeous! It didn’t photograph AT ALL, but I used it right over the top of the pink and buffed it in. It’s a paler mirrored pink with a glassy shimmer. I seriously considered buffing it onto all my nails.

The holographic powder is from Born Pretty. I put it over a black base and buffed it in. Tip: Be careful to cover ALL of the powder as you’re applying the top coat. Anything that didn’t get covered and set will wipe/wash off. Ditto with the mirror powder. You need to protect/set it with the top coat.

My thumb is Born Pretty Starry Gel in Lotus Flower BPss04. It’s not a clear glitter, it’s got a light pink base, so it completely covers the nail in a single coat. It’s awesomely sparkly. There’s two sizes of glitter flakes. It’s one of my favorites. I have Gelish in June Bride and like this one’s better because it has the colored base coat added in.

Note – been buying a TON of Born Pretty on clearance. Haha. 😊
