When you say Morningstar, do you mean mace, or chain flail?
I own both. The mace and one flail were made by a blacksmith I know who makes battle-worthy feudal weapons. A straight-up mace is about as good as it gets for melee damage. It'll crush the fuck out of a target. At the same time, you can skip the $300 I paid for a custom spiked club and just buy a baseball bat, then drill holes and put sharpened lag bolts through it.
A chain flail has to be appropriately sized. The handle should be 125% the length of the chain. My cheap one has a 18" chain reach with a 12" handle. This can lead you to wallop yourself with the thing easily. My good one has the longer handle, and only a 10" chain. That said, to get the best impact, you have to keep the chain whirling - this tires out the arm.
> Why a Machete?
Katanas are not fragile, but they're liable to snap where a cheap machete does not. Katanas are expensive, but the most costly machete I own (and my fave for clearing brush at the ranch) is this thing here, which cost me $17 on sale. (I keep it in my car.) Also, you need a lot less training with a machete to use it effectively. Machetes are meant to be used single-handed, and are basically less of a sword than one bigass axe blade. I also own one of these and one of these, and I'd choose any of those three over my katana in a real, live combat situation. They work well at hewing through 3" thick tree branches. I have no doubt they would fuck someone's day up.

Yup. I also have one of these in the garage. Given a melee survival situation, I'd love to keep that fucking thing in my hand and lay waste to anyone or anything dumb enough to get within reach.
But I'd still keep my .357 on my hip.
A few years ago I was trekking off into the woods on machete adventures with a friend and yes, cigars were included.
I didn't have anything as awesome as that, but my Gerber did the trick for an afternoon of trail blazing.
