My grandma taught me how to hold the hook & how to do a chain stitch ... the rest of the easy stitches (chain, double crochet, etc) I learned from following the illustrations in Get Hooked. The book is directed towards a younger audience so it was sufficiently "dumbed down" for a truly beginner.
There are always lots of charts & diagrams online on how to do certain stitches and tons & tons of videos! YouTube, Lion Brand, RedHeart, they all have some sort of training videos available. When I want to learn a new stitch, google the name of the stitch and then follow along with a diagram or video.
