You'll have to work hard to cut your face open. Shave every other day a week before to get in the hang of it and just apply the gel to your face after you've showered or washed it in hot water. Shave with the grain, then gel up a second time and shave against it. Use your hand to find spots you've missed. The blade should be doing the work so let it glide over your face.
Going forward, a DE razor is much, much better for many reasons including cost and quality of shave.
