Vernor Vinge's famous essay mentioned the possibility:

The academic topic closest to this is collective intelligence. MIT has a group working on it. (One of their projects is the climatecolab, which I've been involved with.)
A really great, short introduction to the field is The Wisdom of Crowds. Another great book is Howard Bloom's Global Brain.
While all this involves collective intelligence greater than any individuals in the group, so far it's not so much about an actual conscious mass mind. Of course that's also true of evolution.
