As you noted, there are two ways to do this.
You can get something like this (maybe longer, if you can find it) to adapt your front panel USB3 slots to connectors that you can plug into the mobo in the back.
Alternatively you can get one of these and adapt the USB3 header into a USB2 header so it can connect to your mobo's internal USB2 connector. This will turn your front panel USB3 ports into USB2 ports.
The ones with multiple 3.0 ports seem to cost >$60.
How about getting one of the 3.0 expansion cards (with ~4) with normal 3.0 ports, and a couple of these? It may look not as neat with cables coming out of the case, but it's pretty cheap and will work.
Case ports -> adapter -> pci card with 3.0 ports.
Ah ok. The case I'd like to get is seen here with that USB 3.0 header. So I need something like this and connect it to this, which then connects to the case header in the video above, in order to get that 3.0 to work? Damn, that's a lot of work haha.
So how come the adapter I linked in the first comment wouldn't fit in the I/O shield? Is it because that cable is a substitute for the header cable? I'm considering the H81M-E34 instead of the H81M-P33. They are exactly the same, but the E34 has some USB 3.0 headers. It's quite annoying though, as the difference is around £8, just for a 3.0 header :/
And I'm just a bit confused about what pins and pci-e goes where. I'm not quite sure what pci-e actually is, but I think it has to do with the features on the case connecting to the mobo? I'm confused about what the 3.0 pins are compared to 2.0, the pins for the headers, and what the pci-e card actually does and how it works!
Only thing I would change is to go for a 212 evo cooler and pick up one of these: link
