If you have acrylic paints and want to do detailed stuff you should totally sub it for polish this will save some money and time. I love using acrylic paints over designs if you mess up you can always wipe it away. So I think I'd definitely invest in some nail art brushes if you plan on doing this a lot, it will make you're life so much easier. You can go for a nice brand of brushes like this or just get some cheaper ones to start out and see how you like it.

I also use drugstore polish and stuff you can get at Sally's Beauty Supply Store on sale because they often do red tag deals where red tagged items are marked down extra.

Most of my collection is made up of Sinful Colors (walgreens/CVS 2$ a bottle sometimes they have a two for one sale) China Glaze (I wait for it to be on sale but they're about 6.99 regular price so you can often find bottles marked down about 3 dollars or so) Finger Paints (Same as China Glaze these are about 4.99 regular price though so I do sometimes just snag them if I like the color) And any other cheaper drugstore brand like Wetn'Wild, Sally Hansen (sometimes both of these brands will be marked down at CVS/Walgreens for like 50 cents a bottle). All of these brands I've mentioned I've managed to have last me at least a week of wear but I also use a nice base coat and this top coat.

If you want to go all out and do gradients and things like that I recommend getting some Make up sponges and some pointed q-tips. A silicone mat is fun but not essential, however, now that I have one I find myself using it all the time. I have this one and it was worth it.

I've found that the polishes that come in those kits are usually crap, I never bother with them anymore. You can use acrylics like someone already mentioned, although I honestly usually just use normal nail polish, since I've got so much of it already. If you wanted to stick to the nail polish realm, you could also look into special stamping polishes--they are much more pigmented and generally don't have to be "built up" like a lot of nail polish does; I use a small brush and my white konad stamping polish 100% of the time when I do any white nail art detailing.

For brushes, I bought a set like this and have found they work perfectly well for my needs. The dotting tools can be really handy. Just be sure to clean the brushes with pure acetone, NOT regular nail polish remover, because it won't work!
