I'd read the entirety of Mike Grell's work. Start with Hunter's Moon and work from there.

After that, for a more modern take on GA, read Jeff Lemire's work, the whole of which was recently collected in a HC Deluxe edition.

Well, bought more comics tonight. And in case you're wondering, I bought first 3 volumes of Batman & Robin, this Flash book, and Green Arrow.

As Lemire's been recommended, I'll go for Mike Grell's late 80s run.

Mike grell has an amazing run on green arrow in the 80s. this is the first volume it’s very frank Miller-esque not in writing style but in mood. It’s serious and grounded. I love it and with the exception of the Smith/Winnick run it’s seen as easily the best green arrow run.

A couple of recommendations...

Green Arrow - The Longbow Hunters

Mike Grell's run starting from 1989 which is a continuation of Longbow Hunters. (If you have a local comic shop, it might be cheaper to buy the individual issues which is what I did)

Kevin Smith's run I heard was good although I personally haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Batman - The new52 main Batman run is really good as is Batman/Superman.

As for pre-new52 I would suggest Knightfall, Venom, Batman: Earth One was an interesting new take on Batman, Batman: Legend of the Dark Knight issues #65-68 (Going Sane part 1-4), Batman: Child of Dreams (Japanese Manga with a fantastic story), and Batman Versus Predator (including the two sequel stories).

That is all I can think of off the top of my head.

Volumes refers to a collection of the individual issues. Typically, but not always, they are centered around one story arc. One Volume should usually have collected in it 5-8 individual issues. So Volume 1 of New-52 Green Arrow is just the first few individual issues brought together, while Volume 2 is the next few, etc, etc. It's best to check DC's website out to make sure what issues are collected in the volume.

Now, you do not want New 52 Green Arrow Volumes 1-3. They are garbage and a great injustice to the character. Green Arrow Vol 4. is a great place to start off for Green Arrow in the new-52, particularly if you like the show. I would also suggest some other Green Arrow comics which, while no longer in continuity, are must haves in my opinion for fans of Green Arrow. They are Year One, Hunters Moon, Here There Be Dragons, and The Longbow Hunter. All excellent and classic Green Arrow reads, which while not in current continuity help form the collective opinion of Ollie as a character.

Well if he's not reading the comic books then Lemire's Green Arrow run has been really good and this [first](http://smile.amazon.com/Green-Arrow-Vol-Machine-Graphic/dp/1401246907/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408554646&sr=8-1&keywords=green+arrow+lemire_ of his GA trades is already out with the second out in Oct. They have also been rereleasing some of the older stories by Grell that are considered classics. Unfortunately; the deluxe Kevon Smith one keeps getting pushed back and off top of my head there is only GA trades and not any graphic novels. For Batman there are quite a few current coll things out because of his 75 anniversary. They put out a 75th anniversary book that collects quite a few of his more important issues through the years since his creation and another in Oct that collects three of his most popular trades in the modern era. Though it is all going to depend if he is a active reader and is actively reading the current stuff, has the classic stories, or doesn't have many comics to begin with because there are more recent trades like Court of Owls which is very popular and a lot of people like the mask that came with one of the trade editions.
