> I don't know why we have hope for change anymore.

Because 'green' technologies can now be advocated for effectively on purely economic grounds without relying on concern for climate change. This talk opened my eyes on a wide number of issues. I cannot recommend it enough.

And I'm not normally an optimist, nor am I even a person who actively looks for things to be optimistic about. But Tesla placed 400,000 pre-orders for their Model 3. People are clamoring for EVs, and this is in a country with $2 gas. By 2020 or so EV drivetrains are projected to be cheaper to manufacture than ICE drivetrains. All of these are economic arguments, not "save the environment" arguments. Sure, there is no EV offering right now to replace a Ford F-150. But there will be.

Solar and wind are, at the utility scale, already cheaper than coal, and cheaper in some cases than even natural gas. Even using natural gas cuts the carbon footprint by half in comparison with coal. India just built the world's largest solar plant, and it took only eight months. EVs, batteries, and solar power benefit from exponential curves regarding technology improvement that don't apply equally to ICE vehicles or extraction technologies.

Here are some interesting things on the market already:

  1. Electric boats. Per the video, operation costs (if you include servicing cost for a diesel engine) are comparable.
  2. Electric lawn mowers
  3. Electric motorcycles with 200 city mile/100 open road range. Sure, the motorcycle isn't as cheap as most ICE offerings right now, and they don't have the range for a cross-country jaunt, but that will come in time.

Subsidies won't last forever, nor should they. EV powertrains and batteries are getting cheaper. The subsidies weren't intended to be perpetual, but to nurture the industry along until the technology improved enough to stand on its own economically. We have to compete against China and other countries who are more serious about sustaining and nurturing the competitive advantage of their own companies.

Anyway, effusive pandering aside, there is plenty to be optimistic about on this front. The biggest thing for me is that these technologies, mainly EVs and solar, can now be advocated for on purely economic grounds. Your audience doesn't have to care one whit about the environment. Tesla, particular the Model S, mainly pushes the driving experience as the thing that sells the car. Same with Zero motorcycles. They don't lead with the enviro angle.

Been working pretty well. We literally just got it days ago. It holds one or two batteries depending on use, and seems to be pretty strong. Works for our entire 1/3 acre yard. Light as can be so no self propulsion is required.

Quick back story, our lawn mower low key blew up and started spewing oil all over, so we decided it's time for a new one. We bought this thing and had to wait to cut the grass another week. Even though it got long, the mower had no problem cutting and mulching it. I know it's sometimes easier on the mower to bag, but this thing had no problem. Link below.

Note: this is the higher end model, there is a lower end for ~$150 that also gets good reviews

I have this and it have had no problems

https://www.amazon.com/Greenworks-20-Inch-Force-Cordless-25302/dp/B00GX9WNP2

but I have way less grass. Like 2500 sq ft. How long would it take with a normal lawn mower? It takes me like 30-40 and the batteries easily last. 1/4 acre sounds kind of big for electric.

I bought this one. It comes with two batteries and one kicks on immediately when the other dies, so you get a solid hour or so of active time.

Most of what you're paying for is the batteries, to be honest, but it's much easier than dealing with a cord. Plus, if you end up buying other Greenworks gadgets like a weed whacker, snow blower, leaf blower, etc. then you can buy the battery-less versions and use the batteries that came with the mower.

New Greenworks model on amazon. They run sales every so often.

I have this one, and I like it. I mow about 1/4 acre, and it just about perfectly drains the two batteries I have (but it holds both batteries simultaneously, so no need to stop to grab a fresh one). It's quiet, doesn't smell bad like a traditional mower, and I don't have to mix gas. Also, I've known several people whose house fires originated with their gas-powered lawnmower. I have a 16" chainsaw that I love, and it uses the same batteries.

I used Greenworks Twinforce and have no complaints.

I bought a battery-powered mower last summer when we bought our house. I'm now in the market for a gas mower.

This is what I bought. The problem is mainly that the run time is so far short of what I need for my yard; realistically I need 2-3 charges to do the whole thing, depending on how long the grass is. Unfortunately I don't know my acreage so I get that's not very helpful to you.

The other problem is power - there just isn't that much. If I let the grass go for too long (10-14 days in the growing season), I just can't do it with my mower and have to pay someone. Plus there is sometimes a bit of a mohawk down the center of what I've mowed, I think due to the dual blades.

You can cure these issues by spending tons of money; either hundreds more for a second set of batteries or even more than that for a truly-powerful electric mower, but I'm not really looking to spend that kind of money.

All that being said, battery-powered is still fine if your yard is small enough. It really is so much more pleasant than dealing with a gas mower. I'll be sad to make the switch back over.

I picked this one up, fully expecting it to suck and feel like mowing a lawn with a pair of scissors. It's actually really good and damn near silent:

I'd say it's about 80% as good as the real thing.

I recommend this electric mower I bought a few months back. It’s cordless and it works with their entire line of electric operated tools weed eater leaf blower etc...

I have this and like it on a similar sized lawn, maybe a little bigger. If the grass isn't too long and you mow reasonably fast, you can almost get through it on the smaller battery.

It's not silent but not at all unreasonable to be running at 8:30AM. If you consider the 60V /u/go_pack_go45 recommended I suggest giving them both a try (I don't see why they wouldn't let you run it in the store). The more powerful the motor gets the louder they get (although they're all quite quiet).

I am almost sure total cost of ownership will be lower for a gas mower but it's worth not messing with all the gas hassles you mentioned, and it's incredibly light. I agree that the string trimmer is good too.

I do the same thing. I’ll spray grass killer the week before just so it dries out a bit. Easier to cut.

The first greenworks I bought was the dual battery mower.

It came with two batteries...both 40 volt. One is 4AH and the other is 2AH

The only time I run them down is when my lawn is really long. But usually I can mow, edge and blow all without charging.

Thanks,

Specifically how would you compare the power of this cord model vs this battery model?
