I've used one of these USB wireless adapters before to extend my range, and it worked well. It's a little more awkward because you have to have it connected via USB cable, but it can be pointed towards the access point. The other downside is that it's a 802.11b/n adapter, so if you have 802.11n in the dorm, it won't take advantage of those speeds, but it will still connect at 54Mbps. Might be worth a try...it's not extremely expensive (but then again, as a college student, everything is expensive).

EDIT: You can also get a longer USB cable (with the proper ends of course), place the adapter on the other side of the wall, run the cable through the door, and connect to your laptop. A USB cable can't be very long, so you might be sitting close to the door.
