Hmm, if you could save up 5-600, you could get a Hamilton Open Heart. I'd say that's about the minimum to get a nice skeleton you'll probably want to hang on to as your interest in watches grows.
Another route is to look into some smaller Chinese brands and just try out the style. I don't know names off-hand, but shouldn't be too hard to find.
The thing with the Fossil is that I'd bet you a fancy lunch that within in 6 months you won't be so enamored with it and, assuming you really like the skelton thing, will want something a nicer... like the Hamilton.
