I started learning in High School and continued on and off until college. When I wasn't in class I was listening to German music that I liked and following along with the lyrics, singing along. When I wasn't in class, I was reading stories in whatever level that suited my abilities and reading the news, even if I couldn't understand it. Often I would need to read it more than once to at least get the gist when I was at a lower lever. I also got to know some natives at my university and met with them at least once a week to have a conversation which was half English and half German. (I recommend anybody do this if they can manage, if not in person then on the internet) Lastly, I play all video games that I can in German. So if you are a gamer, then I recommend switching your language settings to German when it's available. I recently got my bachelor's degree in German as a foreign language, but I certainly wouldn't expect everyone to go this far, as anyone can learn a language on his/her own, it just takes an honest commitment. Lastly, I recommend you get yourself a grammar reference, you will need it learning the language the who way through. You get get the one that I got here. It's pricey, but i think it's quite good, you should shop around in any case and see what will satisfy your needs.
I hope that what I've said here will help you. If you ever want a someone to practice with I would be happy to help you.

I don't have all of my books with me right at this moment, because some are in my college dorm.
