Honestly, I've just grown away from the fantasy genre. I made it about 1/3 of the way through GoT before giving up (basically when the Starks got to the capital). It's not that the writing or story was bad, it just didn't spark my imagination like other books I've read recently.
I used to love fantasy, David Eddings, Salvatore, Le Guin, etc. The last really great book I read was Hanta Yo by Ruth Bebee Hill which was a story about the Lakotah indians in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It didn't pull any punches about how brutal and beautiful their lives were.
I may give GoT another chance, but I find high fantasy far more readable than sword and sorcerer fantasy. Maybe I missed something, but Martin's use of language just doesn't elevate it to high fantasy. You don't get the same feeling as reading, for example, LotR.
