Forbidden Island is great for kids and cooperative. Castle Panic might be a bit advanced for him at 6, but, again, it's a co-op game, so you can help him out. He could probably play King of Tokyo. There's always Hey, That's My Fish!. Also, pretty much any board game by HABA

I would add "Hey, That's My Fish!" to the list, and it's cheap, too! :)

Hey That's My Fish - $11.99 - 2-4 - 20 min

Tiny footprint (small hex ice chunks and tiny penguins).

Your job seems simple: race across a random arrangement of icy fish deposits with a colony of up to four penguins, as you attempt to seize the most fish. But watch out! Competing penguins will try to block you off while the ice floe around you shrinks away. Grab the best fish and outmaneuver your opponents to ensure victory. Whichever player’s penguins collect the most fish by the end of the game is the winner!

The one on the left if the $10 pocket-sized edition. I think the one on the right is the Mayfair deluxe. Huge difference in tile size and character size.

Hey That's My Fish is a great intro to the abstract Zertz. You can get both for around 43 on Amazon.

It's a kids' game from Germany, but don't worry, the instructions come in English. It's easy and fun. You have a bunch of ice flow hexagonal tiles that have either 1, 2, or 3 fish on them. They are all laid out, then you place your penguins on tiles. On your turn, you move one penguin in any of the six directions in straight line until you choose to stop, run into an empty space or another penguin. You get to keep the tile you left at the beginning of each turn. When you can't move anywhere, that penguin is out of the game, and when all the tiles are claimed, the game is over. Player with the most fish, not tiles, wins.

The second time we played this game, our 7yo managed to cut most of us off on a small ice flow, leaving the rest of the tiles for him.
