So I’m very new to the nfa item club and have quickly discovered first hand that .22 suppressors are dirtier than the girls I pick up in the Craigslist personals section.

The first time I cleaned it, I wondered how sand and black shit could physically come out of 22 cartridges. The second time I cleaned it, I confirmed that was indeed the norm.

After that, I placed my order for a Hornady 2L ultrasonic heated cleaner. When I got to researching suppressor cleaning, this seemed to be the preferred method after “the dip”. I also hope to get into reloading soon so this can serve double duty for cleaning brass decently (though I’ve read it won’t produce the shiny brass akin to dry/wet tumbling, but I digress).

I also got to looking into cleaning solutions and narrowed it down between Simple Green HD and ZEP citrus cleaner. I picked up both from Home Depot and tried the ZEP on this cleaning. “Power Purple” seems to be another favorite but I didn’t see it locally.

The gritty details are in the album but overall this was significantly easier than only using a brush, elbow grease, and cleaner. First bath was meh, second bath was a lot better, and follow up Hoppe’s scrubbing made things look almost new.

Another interesting note was how many rounds I should run between cleanings. The first two times I disassembled the suppressor it was very easy but that was only after 200-300 rounds. This third time I think I was close to 500 and it was significantly harder to take apart.

All and all, the ultrasonic cleaner worked very well I thought. I read about soda blasting and actually picked up a sand blaster gun but my air compressor is tiny so I’m not sure how effective that will be.

Please comment on this cleaning method as well as recommend your personal means of cleaning suppressors!

I have this one but I have only used on brass and silencer baffles so far.
