My understanding of it comes mostly from this text which I don't have current access to. It's not purely speculation on my part, I just don't have the actual passages ready to copy/paste.

This is an ongoing debate of course. A number of researchers claim that AAVE isn't a creole at all. I was just giving a broad overview of how language acquisition occurs in most cases. I'm sure someone with a higher level of expertise can refine or correct my assertions.
