I think this 14 inch HP for $220 is a fantastic deal and something you should look into. It only has 32 GB SSD which is quite small but you could try to make use of cloud storage though icloud, or google drive. Or an external drive as you said.
I think that's basically the best value you will be able to find.
You can drop $20 off the price here and get a similar one for $200. The main difference is the screen quality will not be as good. The battery life is marginally longer on the cheaper model though, since the lower resolution screen does not take as much power to run. I'm not sure if that is worth $20 to you, but if you're on a budget this may be the one to get.
