Are you planning to do anything demanding with the laptop? What major are you in?

If you won't be pushing the laptop to its limits you can get away with an inexpensive one. It will be great for Netflix, Word, and Facebook. My suggestion would be to look for the following things in a laptop.

  1. An SSD (solid state drive). This is what makes the laptop feel fast, and it's not an expensive component. The laptop will turn on fast, respond fast when you click, and just feel snappy in general.
  2. Good Battery Life. This is pretty self explanatory, you want your laptop to last a while.
  3. A good trackpad and keyboard. I'm not sure what you're a fan of as far as this goes but Lenovo laptops have excellent keyboards and Macs have excellent trackpads.
  4. Build Quality. Don't get the cheapest piece of plastic you can find. Some metal in the construction is always nice.
  5. The screen. You want something bright with good colors. IPS or high resolution is great. Definetely don't settle for anything below 1080p. As far as size goes I find 15.6" to be the sweet spot for laptops. Big enough to work on but not so massive you can't carry it around.

If I had the money I would buy something similar to this but with better materials. The Ryzen processor also makes it good for gaming (as far as laptops go) if you're into that https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834850877&cm_re=amd_ryzen_laptop-_-34-850-877-_-Product . I think this is pretty good bang for your buck though.

Someone else suggested the Huawei Matebook D and apparenty they're affordable so I'll add this to my recommended laptops https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Kepler-MateBook-14-Mystic/dp/B07G7GSM29/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1534866943&sr=8-5&keywords=Matebook+D&linkCode=sl1&tag=hothard-20&linkId=854b2cd1dc4758bf1aac724ff47369b8&language=en_US

Take a look at this one Huawei Kepler Matebook. Personally my favourite for the price.

Lenovo Thinkpads i guess. If you do not need a dGPU, then you can use huawei matebook D

https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Kepler-MateBook-14-Mystic/dp/B07G7GSM29

It has an amd iGPU.

gaming laptops have terrible build quality.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-560X-Laptop-GPU.301586.0.html

If you want to give a go, then look at notebook check and click on any AMD dGPU you want.

The biggest value of this laptop is the integrated GPU.

Based on some comments from Amazon (see link), the RAM cannot be upgraded because it is soldered into the motherboard. It has a glossy display which some people may like while others will dislike. Glossy screens makes colors look more vibrant, but they are very reflective which can be annoying especially when sun glare is reflected directly to your eyes.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G7GSM29

Laptops with soldered RAM means there is only 1 stick of RAM in the laptop which causes the RAM to run at half speed (single channel) rather than full speed (dual channel). That generally does not affect many programs. However, that does affect integrated graphics performance; two sticks of RAM (dual channel) can generally increase game performance by 10% - 20% but that varies depending on the specific game.

A possible alternative are either the Lenovo Thinkpad E485 (14" 3.85lbs) or the E585 (15.6" 4.8lbs); both start at $420 with the Black Friday sale. But you need to customize it a bit since by default they only have the Ryzen 3 2200u APU. Upgrades for both laptops costs the same so it is simply a matter of choosing 14" or 15.6" screens.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-series/c/thinkpade?menu-id=ThinkPad_E

Configuring the either the E485 or E585 with the Rzyen 7 2700u APU (Vega 10 integrated graphics... estimated to be roughly similar to nVidia 940m performance), 1080p matte finish (not glossy) IPS screen and 8GB of RAM (two 4GB sticks) brings the total price to $576.

One drawback to both laptops is no option for a backlit keyboard.

There ya’ go. It’s not the same model, but I’d say it’s worth it. If you live in the US you can buy it for $439, slightly used. Considering the specs, it’s an absolute steal.
I ordered the MX150 version of it at a higher price and it should arrive today. I can update you about my opinion of it once I get to use it a bit.

I would go with this Huawei Matebook D 14. It comes with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, battery life (9-10 hours!), whats the main bonus for this AMD machine, because others offers much less in the same using conditions, good quality 4x dolby audio speakers etc. The main downside of Matebook thats not 2-in-1, it has touchscreen and 180 degree hinge. Huawei has good build quality, it feels premium, all aluminum chassis and only 3.5 lbs.

It is this one and it comes with a 256 SSD - and it has room for an HDD - if you need more storage. I see it starts from 616.5$

Huawei Kepler Matebook D. I think it looks really nice (mainly because it resembles a macbook) , it has a 57.4 Watt Hour battery, and it has some nice speakers that are actually pointing directly at you instead of at the bottom which means it would be pretty nice for movie watching. Though I have heard that the customer support from Huawei isn't the greatest because it's located in china.

Edit: I would personally recommend the R5 version because it does have better graphics, but since you're not gaming I don't think it would really matter.

Edit #2: It is 3.4 pounds and 12.7 x 8.7 x 0.6 inches

u/LonerIM2 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you didn't get one yet then this one gets my vote.

u/atech087 · 1 pointr/linuxquestions

I'm actually strongly considering the Matebook D now, did you get it on Amazon or elsewhere?

u/Bwhippped · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

One of the best values right now is the Matebook D, a bit more money but vastly superior to those two dells. If it's still too expensive I'd suggest at least something with an SSD, absolutely crucial IMO

u/Mageoftheyear · 1 pointr/linuxmasterrace

You might want to check out the Huawei MateBook D (Ryzen 2500U).

It only folds flat though, so not exactly a 2-in-1.

LonTV has a review of it and it's got great out-of-the-box Linux support (the touchscreen even works on Ubuntu). Supports virtualisation too (just make sure you've got the right bios update).

It's very popular over on the r/AMD sub, so you can check for lots of testimonials there.

Currently on sale for $540 USD at Walmart (usual price $640).

Also available from Amazon, but it's $610 USD there.

It's insane value for the price.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/india

Thinkpad X series maybe too expensive for you, but try to find a Dell XPS 13 on sale or brought over from the US, it'll just about squeeze into your budget.

If you didn't mind some weight then a Dell Inspiron will easily suit you.

Huawei Matebook D is something else to look at. Again best if you got it from someone visiting China.

The most powerful Ryzen laptop you can get at the moment (but also the heaviest and most expensive): https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-PH517-61-R0GX-Processor-Graphics/dp/B07GWX5X26

Otherwise this is probably something more geared towards your needs: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G7GSM29
