One of the foremost researchers on inequality, James K. Galbraith, has done a lot of work to unhitch inequality from growth or development as if it were some inescapable natural phenomenon (as many today like to characterize it), and rather points to deliberate policy changes within global and national economies that are strongly associated with dramatic rises in inequality:
