To me, the Dayton sounds like a cheap speaker. I would pass.

I would go this route for an extreme budget (they're currently on sale): http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-P153-Primus-Bookshelf-Satellite/dp/B004649W1Y

They will sound a lot better than either of them.

Okay, if I were doing this I'd get:

Speakers $152: http://smile.amazon.com/Infinity-P153-Primus-Bookshelf-Satellite/dp/B004649W1Y/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449863372&sr=1-6&keywords=infinity+primus

Nice thing with this is that when you decide to move to a good surround system you can take the speakers and move them to surround duty and get the P363 towers and PC351 center and have a speaker set that will last you for a very long time.

The Infinity Series is front ported. Sold each so keep that in mind. I'd think those alcove ends are loaded with wood and you won't have enough space for an in-wall.

I've blown your friend's budget by about $70 (they would also need to improvise some speaker stands, but this isn't always too much of a problem) and they'll need to drop another ~$20 on speaker wire, but I suspect that this would be a more than satisfying setup for watching movies or listening to music. (I have the same basic setup, a few years older with an AVR-2310. I had an AVR-1604 before that and only replaced for it's lack of HDMI inputs)
