• "Musical" covers a lot of ground. Modern Avenue Q style? Contemporary Hamilton style? 90s Disney style? Sondheim style? It helps to know what it is you're aiming for.
• Rhyming is its own skill, and should be worked on after the basics. I like rhyming and there are ways to make it work for you, but inexperienced slaves to the rhyme end up singing lines that don't really flow or panic when they set up a difficult-to-rhyme word for themselves.
• Emotion and commitment outweigh singing skill any day. Think: if we didn't have words, what is it about this song that makes it song angry? In love? Sad? etc.
• Pick up this book for yourself and this book for your musical director. Yeah, you're gonna need a musical director.
