We use a 26.5Q container without the lid and carry their vacation 2x3 CC cage (spoiled pigs :P). We usually load the coroplast bottom first and then stack all of our stuff on top of it including this storage container.
We've used smaller boxes/plastic containers, but this one gives them a good amount of space so that they can cuddle with each other or give each other space during the travel.
I would suggest against using the lid for this container unless you poke lots of holes in it. Maybe you could use a few of the CC grids as a make shift top for the box.
