Take it was a barrel of salt. Benedict's text is famous but it comes from an era extremely far removed from modern Japan and, in my experience, is no longer considered significant to understand contemporary Japan.

I would recommend reading what Japanese scholars have said about their own country.

Two great places to start are Nakane Chie's Japanese Society. This is Nakane's own translation (and minor expansion) of her own Japanese thesis called タテ社会の人間関係 ("Personal Relations in a Vertical Society"). She pioneered the discussion on tate-shakai (vertical society). The text is compact and easy to get through, with major implications on how one sees the forms and functions of society in Japan.

Another excellent society jumping off point is Doi Takeo's The Anatomy of Dependence. Doi famously brought amae to the forefront of discussions on Japanese society. This text is really enlightening in terms of personal relationships in Japan.
