I just checked out Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African American Cooking: A Cookbook from the library and it has very fascinating historical recipes and anecdotes.

Earlier this year a British book called Midnight Chicken: & Other Recipes Worth Living For that reads like a memoir about her recovery from depression after a suicide attempt.
