for the sides, trim them up a bit like this I would think example 1, example 2. It cleans up the sides and makes your beard look cleaner and longer. That's a personal preference. many here like the "natural" look but myself If I go natural I look too crazy. I trim up the sides down, and leave the lower beard alone.

So I use a beard a beard brush like this one AFTER I apply beard oil.

This is the beard oil I'm using right now. it smells amazing. lasts all day. Apply beard oil right after a warm shower. And brush the beard with the brush.

For more control, you can use a beard balm or wax like this one. Apply it to your beard and brush it.

Beard oils and balms soften and eliminate any scratchy beard issues. Use daily in the morning.

Everything above is just examples. Find a scent that you prefer and try it out. Lots of companies out there make lots of scents. I prefer woodsy/spice scents myself.
