The Topping DX3 Pro is an excellent external DAC
/headphone amp/preamp. You can connect powered speakers to it.

Here are some white powered speakers by Kanto https://www.amazon.com/Kanto-Powered-Speakers-Bluetooth-Preamp/dp/B01N31DTF5/

With $600, you can get a very nice setup.

If you want a simple setup, you can pair the Uturn (without phono stage) with these YU6s which have a phono stage built in: https://www.amazon.com/Kanto-Powered-Speakers-Bluetooth-Preamp/dp/B01N31DTF5

A similar speaker in white is the Kanto YU6 for $340. They add phono and optical inputs and bluetooth built in as well as tone and balance controls.

  • Inputs: 1 x Bluetooth 4.0 with Qualcomm aptX | 1 x 3.5mm mini-jack AUX | 1 x RCA w/ Phono Switch | 2 x Optical (TOSLINK)
  • Outputs: 1 x Subwoofer | 1 x USB Charge 5V 1A

Yeah I would look at either the Kanto YU6's or Klipsch R15PM's then.

There's also been deals on floorstanding Klipsch R26PF's for $400 if you feel like holding out for a deal.

If the receiver has a "phono" input then it should have a phono preamp built in. Most old receivers do, that's how people listened to most of their music after all. Sounds like the preamp might be busted?

Depending on your budget I'd suggest something like these: https://www.amazon.com/Kanto-Powered-Speakers-Bluetooth-Preamp/dp/B01N31DTF5

That's what I have. They've got a built in phono preamp, they're powered so no need for an external amp, they have bluetooth, aux, an output for a sub if you want to add one, they get loud, have decent bass for a bookshelf speaker, come in a bunch of different colors/finishes... Pretty much everything you'd want and more from a pair of speakers.

If these are too expensive, the YU4s are $100 cheaper I think, but they're a bit smaller so you're not going to get quite the same bass response and they might struggle to fill a larger room.

Not wanting a receiver really limits your options. The only two speakers that I can think of would be good are the Kanto YU6 or the brand new, greatly reviewed Vanatoo Zero’s (back ordered by a month). For a sub, you could get anything really, including the beast that is the Rythmik FVX15.

If getting a receiver, then the Denon X1300 (if you don’t mind authorized factory refurb with a manufacture’s warranty, or else it’s $100 more for new), my usually recommended HTD Level Three bookshelves leaving $700-$800 for a sub, so this $605 HSU sub. If wanting a 3.1, then you can either get the matching HTD center, or if you don’t mind B-stock, the RBH towers and center for $661 (use the coupon code or it’s $70 more); the sub would need to be changed for the $550 Rythmik sub.

If you get employee discounts, see is you can get the SVS PB2000 for cheaper than the $550 and $605 subs mentioned, they are similar, but BestBuy only carries the SVS, so if you can get it for decently cheaper, good.

Thanks for the info.

There are a few decent active speakers in your price range, but not many with an optical input. So far for $200 and under I have only found the Edifier R1850DB. This is a great starting set of speakers. You can find them here:

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1850DB-Bookshelf-Speakers-Bluetooth/dp/B073W1R4XQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1541451470&sr=1-1&keywords=r1850db

Most active speakers in this price range will have RCA inputs instead and a lot of TV's will have RCA outputs to connect to them. If you have the option of connecting through RCA, other great options include the Edifier R1700BT and the Fluance Ai40. If you can spend over $200, some other good options would be the Edifier R2000DB for $250, the Audioengine A2+ for $250, the Kanto YU4 for $330, the Vanatoo Transparent Zero for $360(best on this list, IMO), the Kanto YU6 for $400, or the Audioengine A5+ for 400.

If you want to get a record player down the road, it is important to know whether or not you will want a turntable that has a phono preamp built in(this will limit your selection greatly) or if you want a turntable that requires and external phono preamp(this is most turntables and you will need an amp or receiver that has a phono preamp included). The reason I say this is because the Kanto YU4 and YU6 listed above already has a phono preamp built in, so that's one less thing you need to get down the road. The other speakers do not have this.

The Vanatoo's are probably the best sounding in the list above and have the most inputs if needed.

Not sure if you're in North America, but Kanto has the YU3 (discontinued), YU4 and YU6 that are all powered and come with a subwoofer jack + remote. They are priced higher than the Edifiers you were looking at, but they do go on sale from time to time.

I wouldn't buy them at full price but they have some pretty nice features. I have the YU2s and
