Best budget entry for stubs, probably the Pilot Plumix, the Nemosine pens with stub, or just the Nemosine stub nibs. For cheap italic, the Dollar 717i with italic nib is interesting. Supposedly there is a Pilot Metro with the Plumix stub available too, but I haven't seen it.

Just to try, I would probably go with a Nemosine and extra nibs, so you can try the .6mm, .8mm and 1.1mm stubs they offer. This would also allow you to grab the Knox nibs off of amazon https://www.amazon.com/Knox-German-Fountain-Silver-Calligraphy/dp/B01BNZR7VK in 1.5mm and 1.9mm. This would probably give you the greatest flexibility and experience with stubs.

This. I am not a fan of broad nibs, but I threw one of these in there and for under 12 bucks I had a pen that writes awesome.
