If she's spent decades cutting everything with serrated knives, I would definitely include (I agree, skip the sets) some very nice serrated knives -- doesn't matter if what she's cutting would be better cut with something else; anyone who's been around long enough to be a Nana can be safely assumed to have most preferences pretty set in stone.

Amazon.ca is crazy-overpriced for most things, so definitely comparison shop, too.

You should also assume that her old knives are not going to hit the trash the day she gets the gift, so anything that comes in a block with only enough space for the ones in the set leaves her with having to have two knife storage spots. You might throw in a 'universal' knife block she can put her old ones and the new ones in together.

Try and think about what she will actually use, and what she will actually enjoy, rather than what will seem fancy. If you suspect she will keep using steak knives for a lot of things, a funky coloured set of Laguiole ones with the little bees (shouldn't be too hard to find a Canadian supplier; they're pretty common in kitchen shops here in Ottawa) might amuse her...
