I went to my first mass when I was 19 a few years ago. It was very confusing for me at first, even though I'd already been to an Anglican church, which is similar. Once I understood what the mass was, though, and what Catholics believe goes on in the mass, I felt much more comfortable. This article helped me. Also, if you want to follow along and the church doesn't have pew cards, there are some free apps that are great for that. Laudate is what I usually use (it's also available for Android and Kindle Fire). iBreviary is great too. I find the missalettes are quite confusing for newcomers, so you're not alone if you can't make heads or tails of them.

A prayer said during mass is very powerful. You sound like a great friend. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk.
