Have you considered a wrist mount, or a mount design for somewhere else on your body that would allow for both your hands to be free? You could design a baseplate that could go on a headband light... like remove this lamp that is attached to add your design?
How sensitive is he? I used to use this sitting with my back to his face to block the light
Not sure if it'd be of any use to you, and I can't even begin to offer advice on specific models like /u/mrcandyman, but there are headlights that have their own adjustable straps which may avoid the face shield incompatibility you found. I keep it attached to a baseball cap I wear at night when hunting varmint, it works very well.
This one is the one I got. It's cheap as hell, bright as fuck, and has the red setting. Well worth 9$.

Pack a little basket of sandwiches and drinks and set out to star gaze! It'll be romantic just the two of you and you can maybe see some really cool stuff!

Mine has a strap that goes over my head and around my head. Both can be tightened. I have tightened it so tight that the headlight pops out of its S hooks. So there is a limit to how much I can tighten it. Link to headlight so that you can see the S hooks to the left and right of the lamp.

Saw chain was questioned but after watching the user video of him sawing through a tree in like 5 seconds I'm sold. I've tried cutting wood with machetes and hatchets and it is a PITA.

I also have a Ruger LCP with ~100 rounds I will toss in. I need to make copies of all of my documents to include. I already have a tactical flashlight to put in but will need some extra batteries. I have extra glasses to include. Have some flint and steel and bic lighters to include. Considering some sort of magnifying lense. The eno hammock, some jeans, a sweatshirt, rain jacket, and cap will be included. Also some sunglasses. I need to grab some duct tape, charger/radio, some sort of ereader or survival book, and probably a dozen other things I can't think of right now.
I will also need to make one for my 100lb black lab since I realized I wouldn't be able to leave him behind. Going to start training him to hike and carry a pack etc to have him ready. Ultimately he could become a major asset.
