Being into Android development, I've found O`Reilly's Learning Android by Marko Gargenta to be a comprehensive text-book and excellent guide.

It starts right from the basics and covers a quick intro to the Java language before covering the various aspects of an android app such as Activities, Intents, Services, etc. The most recent second edition covers Kitkat (API Level 19).

I should mention that I only read the first edition but am assuming that this 2nd edition is as good as or better than the first edition. The book is built around building an app and you learn Android by slowly adding features and refactoring as the book progresses. I have to say as someone who has read a lot of beginner books on new tech-related subjects, this book is easily in my top 3.
