Thanks to /u/Hondare for the catalog pictures.

Looking through my collection I found in the early 2000's there were two diagrams to set up Hogwarts.

The one /u/Hondare found uses the first sets in 2001. Here is the diagram I found: http://imgur.com/pZgaqNH and the set list (which I've also typed out below) http://imgur.com/mXq8Vq0 http://imgur.com/8CTx4Bs

  • 4709 Hogwarts Castle (2001) in the mid-ground to the left.

  • 4707 Hagrid's Hut (2001) in the foreground.

  • 4702 The Final Challenge (2001) is to the right of 4709 Hogwarts Castle (2001) and is directly underneath the chess section of 4704 The Chamber of Winged Keys (2001) by taking off the roof part.

  • 4704 The Chamber of Winged Keys (2001) is also held up by the left edge of 4706 Forbidden Corridor (2001)

  • 4701 The Sorting Hat (2001) is underneath 4704 The Chamber of Winged Keys (2001) directly underneath the winged keys section of 4704 The Chamber of Winged Keys (2001), but is not connected with any of the other sets.

  • 4708 Hogwarts Express (2001) is then to the background to the left.

They came out with a different sets in 2002 that were also "modular" and could be linked into some of the 2001 sets. I don't have the poster of this one, but I do have the diagram http://imgur.com/aE7lmlm of how it was put together.

  • The boathouse section of 4709 Hogwarts Castle (2001) is on the far left

Here is where it gets complicated:

  • Next is 4705 Snape's Class (2001) which serves as the base. The dueling section of 4733 The Dueling Club (2002) is put in front of it.
  • 4731 Dobby's Relase (2002) is placed on top of the small room of 4705 Snape's Class (2001)
  • The room of 4733 The Dueling Club (2002) is placed on top of the big room of 4705 Snape's Class (2001).
  • On top of the large 4733 The Dueling Club (2002) room is the tower part of 4730 Chamber of Secrets (2001).

    The next modular section is:

  • The remainder of 4709 Hogwarts Castle (2001) is placed directly on top of the remainder of 4730 Chamber of Secrets (2002) with the basilk and face of Salazar Slytherin loose in front of this section.

    The next section is:

  • The roof is removed off of 4712 Roll on the Loose (2002) and 4735 Slytherine (2002) is placed on top of this. (Not sure why this isn't flipped since Slytherine's common room is in the dungeon.)

  • To the right of this is 4729 Dumbledore's Office (2002)

The following sets are not connected but shown:

  • 4728 Escape from Privte Drive (2002)
  • 4726 Quidditch Practice (2002)
  • 4707 Hagrid's Hut (2001)
  • 4727 Aragog in the Dark Forest (2002)

This also means that the following 2001 and 2002 sets are just loose and not part of the "modular" building of Hogwarts or the diagrams.

  • 4721 Hogwarts Classrooms (2001)
  • 4722 Gryffindor House (2001)
  • 4723 Diagon Alley Shops (2001)
  • 4711 Flying Lesson (2002)
  • 4714 Gringotts Bank (2002)
  • 4726 Quidditch Practise (2002)

The 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007 sets were not really "modular" from what I can tell.

The only modular parts of the 2010 and 2011 sets that were modular was

  • 4842 Hogwarts Castle (2010) which could be linked up with 4867 Hogwarts the bridge section (2011).

I would highly recommend LEGO Harry Potter: Building the Magical World as it gives lots of details on all the HP sets and it comes with an exclusive Harry Potter mini-figure found nowhere else. And if you collect Harry Potter mini-figures, I also recommend LEGO Harry Potter: Characters of the Magical World which also comes with a unique Harry Potter mini-figure.

You may want to check out this lego Harry Potter book which has a page or 2 on this. Most sets are created by not more than 2 designers, and I think the total Lego Harry Potter team is about 10 people with various jobs.
