Plain neutral chunky sweaters are my jam. I have loads from different brands and love them all, but I'm in UK so some of the brands I'm listing here may not deliver to US or may just have annoyingly high customs fees. :(

All of these have a sort of "minimalist Scandi" vibe. Listed from luxury to fast fashion.

  • Acne Studios - wonderful for draping, style and quality but not friendly on the wallet. (eBay is always worth a look though.)

  • Hope Stockholm - Minimalist knitwear in various styles. Expensive, but not quite Acne Studios-expensive. Haven't tried this one myself, but maybe one day... They seem rather overpriced for the fabric content which makes me hesitant. But man, that "Grand" jumper has my name written on it.

  • Maison Cashmere - nice quality basic knitwear at reduced prices. They create knitwear for other brands but also use their factory in Italy to produce no-frills version of their own label. The drawback is that it takes long to produce the items you order. I got a 100% cashmere dress from them for £98 a couple of years ago, excellent value for money.

  • Weekday - one of H&M's sister labels, this is a good budget alternative that sometimes does great dupes of Acne's stuff. Mostly acrylic or wool/acrylic mix, but pretty good value for money. I have the Swirl jumper from them and it's very chunky and sumptuous.

  • Honourable mention to Topshop. They don't exactly specialise in any one style, but I have a simple grey acrylic jumper with side zippers from them and it has held up well for the past couple of years and is very wearable.

Other brands that I haven't tried but have a hunch that they might be worth checking out if you're into sweaters: COS, Samsoe & Samsoe, AllSaints, Uniqlo

Also, a disclaimer... None of these sweaters will probably last you a decade I'm afraid, unless you wear them very carefully, rotate them, take care of them and store them properly during off-seasons.

Some tips that will help you prolong the life of your sweaters:

  • Use a pilling comb to get rid of the fuzz at friction points like armpits etc.

  • Always wear a top under the jumper as this will greatly reduce the need for washing your knits and thus prolong their life.

  • Use a wool/cashmere spray to freshen up knits. And when you need to wash them, always handwash (or super duper delicate cold 20 degrees machine wash cycle) with specific wool/cashmere shampoo. Washing knits in general is a PITA, but the idea is that you only wash them when they are stained (and you can't simply spot-clean) or stink like hell.

  • Get a mesh drying rack like this and always dry your sweaters laying flat. This will help retain their shape. This particular one works great because you can place it over your bathtub - useful when the sweater is dripping wet.

You can wash knits in the sink with a handwash detergent then dry using a towel... lay a large towel out, put the jumper on top then fold the towel over it. Roll the whole thing into a sausage and twist it to get the water out, then dry it flat on a frrsh towel or [mesh airer] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leifheit-72408-Clothes-Drying-Sensitive/dp/B0029F1Q66). That airer folds up as well, so not a pain to store. Bit of a faff but quite satisfying!
