While the HP and Asus systems you link to look really nice and would fit your liking in terms of aesthetics and weight, if you are doing some serious CAD , Solidworks etc, they will struggle. The number one downfall is the fact that they have only a weak i7-7500U dual core processor. Based on Solidworks manufacturers ''All SolidWorks Simulation products take advantage multi core and multi CPU architectures''.. In a nutshell, a quad core i5 or i7 processor is recommended. Check this out..

Something like this Thinkpad p50 would do a much better job in Solidworks and Autodesk due to the fact that it has a powerful quad core processor and importantly , one of the graphics cards that is optimized for Solidworks, the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M.

I'd go with a Thinkpad P50 if you're looking for a good keyboard. It is also very well built and fairly reliable.

Can grab something like this and swap out the HDD for an SSD later on.

If you don't mind installing ram and SSD manually then I would recommend this Lenovo ThinkPad P50 because ThinkPads are known for their great battery life, amazing build quality and very good keyboards and because it comes with everything you need , i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking , 500GB of HDD for storage, high quality Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, and it is within your budget.

(by buying this configuration and installing a SSD you would be saving money, if you prefer not to do that then this configuration or this one might be worth considering.

This 2016 Newest Lenovo ThinkPad P50 Mobile WorkStation would be a fantastic selection for you based on the type of work you will be doing as well as based on the fact that you want mobility ( light weighted) and good battery life along side great performance. This laptop has a very powerful core i7 quad core 6th generation processor along with a decent memory, a nice storage and a lovely graphics card. This laptop also stands out very much where build quality is concern-- it has an awesome keyboard to type on and a student should always value that.

Overall, this laptop will do an excellent job in solid works as well as MATLAB.

Oh weird, I must have copied the wrong link. This is what I meant to send, from Lenovo directly. It ships with Windows 7 but it's upgradable to 10 for free.

If you are looking for Iris Pro/ Nvidia Quadro.. look for one of the Thinkpad P50 models maybe? This one maybe? comes w/ Quadro M1000M at ~$1300

The pricing on their Lenovo site is cheaper as there is currently a -25% off

You want the Asus GL502VT.

It's lightweight, high quality, offers the gaming performance you're going to want to make it through school, has up to 8 hours of battery life, and it doesn't even wipe out your budget.

There are professional laptops you could look into as well like the Lenovo ThinkPad P50, but it wouldn't do well with gaming at all.
