Try to pick up some "Lesehefte" from Hueber. I found them very useful. They are relatively short stories written in easy german. There is a glossary in the back, with definitions given in german. That's where I started. You can buy the books at different levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference. (A1-B2, I dont think they go higher).
