Based on my experience, some games to look into include:

Sekigahara - A block wargame that simulates fog of war and the frustration of command by using a hand of cards that have to be managed to move and battle with troops. Plays 2.

Pax Pamir - a tableau building card game where you play a minor tribe trying to come into power under the shadow of the British Empire, the Russian Empire, and an Afghan nationalization movement. Get a copy while you can, as it is going OOP for a while and will go up in cost a lot. A full game in a small box with decent replay value. I recommend getting the Khyber Knives expansion while you're at it. Plays 2-5, 1 with expansion.

...and then we held hands. - an interesting abstract where you can't talk. 2 players.

Leaving Earth - the game of the space race from 1956-1976. A bit basic math heavy and all about logistics planning with a very limited annual budget (and just like the real world there is no roll over, but unlike the real world if you don't spend it all then your budget doesn't get cut). Plays 1-5 and there is an outer planets expansion also.

Escape the Curse of the Temple - I linked to the big box because it comes with a few expansions and promos that will run you a bit to hunt down. A 10 minute cooperative game where players are simultaneously rolling dice in an attempt to rid the group of cursed gems then find the exit... but don't forget to get back to the safety of the starting chamber every 3 minutes or the curse will make you less effective (lose 1 of your 5 dice for the game). Simple symbols, can be taught in a few minutes, can add complexity, good to get non-games to try with the minimal play time. 1-6 players.

Lewis & Clark: The Expedition - A race game that has worker placement, resource processing, multi-use cards, and an element of deck building. This is a game that really wowed my wife and me, blending many elements we like into one beautifully illustrated game. 1-5 players.

Conquest of Paradise - I wanted to say Stellar Conquest, but that is an older game that few seem to appreciate anymore. Conquest of Paradise is a 4x (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) game of Polynesian tribes, and it is a victory point race. You have the option to forgo conflict or aggression, or to be militariistic (either against players or neutral tribes that control known territories on the board). Not too complex to learn, and a very solid game - the 2nd edition is also beautiful (I have 1st edition which isn't as beautiful or high quality in components). 2-4 players.

Unfortunately, I tend to like longer/heavier games. Most of these are probably going to take around 2 hours to play. Of them all, I highly recommend the Pax Pamir as something to try. If you miss out on finding a copy of that, hurry and grab Pax Renaissance with the expansion from Sierra Madre Game's website - its a little heavier than Pax Pamir but also has a lot more going on. These smaller box (size of The Grizzled or 50% bigger... oh, hey, there's a neat cooperative game to try also... highly recommend that one also, 2-5 players) have full heavier games inside, and they use a subset of cards so you can get a lot of replay out of them.

If he likes Coup, I would recommend The Resistance, it's like Coup, but more in depth - and it can fit a large number of players.

Ticket to Ride is a pretty popular game, and there's a wide variety of expansions/versions (Even a 1910 US expansion).

I've not played it, but Lewis and Clark has a historical theme, and shares elements with the games he likes.
