I recently had the opportunity to compare this exact model to the LG 34" Ultrawide (3440 x 1440p) 75Hz IPS Curved Freesync Monitor $999 (LG 34UC98-W)

The Samsung monitor is a VA panel. Color calibration was awful out of the box and required manual adjustment.
The LG monitor is an IPS panel. Color calibration was near perfect out of the box.

After calibrating the Samsung display, here is my comparison:

  • The colors aren't quite as good as the LG.
  • The blacks aren't quite as dark as the LG despite advertising QLED tech (feint but even backlight bleed).
  • The whites, no matter the adjustment, we're slightly more warm that the LG.
  • The Samsung has no corner backlight bleeding like the LG.
  • With both monitors sets to 75Hz, the Samsung panel has A LOT less ghosting than the LG does. (tested using ufotest)
  • At 100Hz, it blows the LG out of the water when it comes to ghosting.
  • The height-adjustable stand is better on the Samsung.
  • The tilt mechanism is better on the Samsung.
  • The base is better on the LG (I personally dislike the gigantic circle taking up so much space).
  • The bezels are thinner on the Samsung.
  • The Samsung weighed slightly less.
  • The controls of the jog dial are superior to the buttons system on the LG.

The Samsung proved to be a much better display for dedicated gaming (tested using Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, Grim Dawn, and Albion Online)
The LG proved to be a much better display for content creators reliant on color accuracy above all else, and might game on occasion (tested using Adobe Premiere Pro)

If I were to buy one today, I would buy the Samsung for the VA panel's superb lack of ghosting in comparison to the IPS panel in the LG.

    Hope this helps someone.

either that or he has the wrong one.

I'm in this boat, man. I want curved ultrawide, too. I'm not sure which of these things is the most important to me, because the only curved, ultrawide, 144Hz G/Freesync monitor seems to be the incredibly-problematic Acer Predator.

I could forego 144Hz because G/Freesync are pretty great and get LG's Freesync 144Hz curved offering, but that's $1200...

Not sure what to do. :(

My first recommendations are going to be the Dell U3415H (old model) and U3417W (newer model). They're listed as $799 and $879, respectively, on Dell's website right now but are continually offered for much less. They are very similar with the key takeaways being:

I could be wrong, but I think it's the LG 34UC98-W

I currently have this and I quite like for work: https://www.amazon.com/LG-34UC98-W-34-Inch-UltraWide-Thunderbolt/dp/B019O78DPS. I kind of use it like a two monitor setup with window arrangement. I know for games 34 is probably quite a lot. In terms of desk I have quite a decent size desk, but I assume for gaming the monitor would need to be further back.

Thanks for the deep questions and effort here, much appreciated.

So not an ideal budget breakdown, but I cannot recommend 3440 X 1440 enough: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-34UC98-34-Inch-Diagonal/dp/B019O78DPS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467572459&sr=8-2&keywords=lg+ultrawide

But then you're only left with $270 for your GPU which isn't really worthwhile.

Option one.

Option two.

Might be options worth looking into if you don't need 38".

It’s a pretty nice monitor for me

I cant really decide if I should buy the Samsung CF791, LG 34UC98-W or the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q.

I have a GTX 1070 and the monitor will mostly be used for regular internet browsing, casual gaming and movies, Im guessing because of my GPU I should get something with G-Sync since I probably wont be able to reach 100hz in most games but Im not sure.

so which monitor would probably be the best to buy?

I've been doing most of my photo work on my macbook pro 15" for about a year now and since I've gotten a lot more active on Photoshop recently, I'm ready to make the jump to a larger screen. The real estate you get in photoshop on a 15" is just not there, regardless of the pixels.

I'm thinking I'll dock the macbook and just use the external monitor as the only monitor. I'm not really sure what I want to go for for doing photography work, are there some specific characteristics I would be better off with? Admittedly I'm not doing any kind of pro magazine work where I need perfect color calibration, so there's no point in paying extra for that, so it's mostly about screen estate.

I'm thinking something like https://www.amazon.com/LG-34UC98-W-34-Inch-UltraWide-Thunderbolt/dp/B019O78DPS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473913696&sr=8-3&keywords=LG+34UM88-P could be one way to go, admittedly it's on the pricey side. Also I probably shouldn't bother with curved screens so I can actually work with straight lines.

I think you meant the LG 34UC98. That one indeed has Thunderbolt, and a white backside, for which you pay a nice premium of around $150 :S

The UC88 doesn't have Thunderbolt, I've got one, but for me it's completely fine as I don't need it, it's great that they have this more affordable option for people who don't care about Thunderbolt.

Thanks for your feedback. I am keeping an eye on this one:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-34UC98-W-34-Inch-UltraWide-Thunderbolt/dp/B019O78DPS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474926032&sr=1-1&keywords=lg+ultrawide&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A3547808011

My only concern now is how suitable this would be for games like BF and CS. Thanks again for the input.

I'm not a designer myself, but I've been asked by a designer to help him pick out some new displays. He used to be Apple only, but since Apple stopped producing displays recently he has to get something else.

He does design for print work mostly, and color matching between whats on screen and what is printed is of course a big deal.

Budget is about 5-600 a monitor, and I've been looking at something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019O78DPS/

Any suggestions?

Microsoft is overcharging for that Surface Studio, unless it has ultra-fancy stuff. $3500 for:

i7-7820HQ - way outclassed by the 3600X which costs $248 on Amazon

GTX 1070 - way outclassed by the RX 5700 which costs $350 on Amazon

32GB RAM - Only spec given is DDR4, so 32gb DDR4-3200 is $200 on Amazon

1TB SSD - let's get a 2tb one for $200

Windows 10 - Official license cost is $100

28 in 4500x3000 monitor - This is actually the only remotely challenging thing to get for cheap. 4K doesn't quite match it and 8K cost is through the roof. But I found a colour-calibrated 1440p monitor for $800 so I guess that'll do for content creation.

Total cost: $1898. That leaves $1602 for a PSU, case, case fans, headphones/speakers and motherboard (and maybe cpu cooler if the wraith spire doesn't cut it for you) before we exceed the Surface Studio's price. Therefore, unless you really need that 4500x3000 resoluion, it's a bit of a rip off. And if you really do need high resolution? Well you get the mac, and maybe install Windows to it.
