All these comments are so helpful.

Try this one mate, http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-55LB5900-55-Inch-1080p/dp/B00KVLT08G/ref=sr_1_2?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1416579995&sr=1-2&keywords=lg+tv

Its a nice TV at a great price with awesome reviews.
I plan on buying one for my parents and add the smart features thru a Chromecast or Fire TV.

I recommend this 55" LG for $680.

when looking for a TV for an average viewer, which I'd say is 90% of people (not a videophile). I recommend A) buy a brand you've heard of, Samsung, Vizio, LG, Panasonic, Sony, etc. don't get a Sanyo, Dynex or some other off brand.

B) Get the largest TV you can get in your budget. For most people, they will enjoy a 50" TV more than a slightly better looking 40" TV.

Here are some TV's that should work, all are under $700: The vizio has the most HDMi inputs out of these 3, but you can always buy an HDMI switch box if you have a ton of devices.

Vizio 55" LED
Samsung 55 LED
LG 55" LED

Just bought the LG 55LB5900 for $699. I think it is a good buy if you don't care about or want a SmartTV.

This is the TV: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KVLT08G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1#productDetails

Looks like you're right, only optical out! What a bummer. My last TV had both, I guess I never realized this isn't the norm anymore.

Oh well, good excuse to buy a DAC!

Do you think the Modi would be overkill (http://schiit.com/products/modi) with this amp? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0H8TOC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a sunny loft with 3 big industrial frosted windows (4X6) on the side wall that will be parallel with the tv. I am looking for the best value/quality tv. I will be mostly watching at night but I will need to show videos occasionally day. My concerns with LCD is that the screen quality is good or at least pretty good for now. My concerns with the plasma is reflection, whine, heat. and cost. Thank you! please point out why or any gotchas I am not seeing.

I'd look for a 46-50in. I hear this one is great:

Not sure what your budget is, but that's a pretty good price, I think.

For gaming, refresh rates mean how smoothly the game is presented, and how many times the screen/Xbox "refresh" the scenes per second. The higher the number, the smoother the image. Each one, monitor and source, affects one another, so if your TV is 60Hz and say you have a glorious PC dishing out 120 FPS (frames per second) on a game, you're stuck at 60 FPS, and vice versa.

Since you're playing on console (Xbox), you won't really be taking advantage of anything over 30 FPS (frames per second) on 1080p. That still is NOT saying a 120/240 Hz TV isn't a solid investment! Sports, action movies and fast scenes will all look better if you set up the TV properly.

If budget is your main concern, try hopping around your local Best Buy/Electronics stores and usually enough (bought all my friend's TV's this way) there is a "Display Model," "Refurbished" or "Open Box" TV available that is significantly reduced in price.

A few years back I got my parent's 52" 1080p (can't remember the model) brand new, just a missing manual, for about 30% off only because it was returned at the near end of the return period, and it wasn't being sold at the store anymore (BB).

Although I can't really recommend anything (on mobile), I would take a look at stores, and stick close to brand names like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and the like... Anything else is pretty much asking for trouble. You pay a bit more, BUT usually have a better warranty/support service.

Hope this helps. Also, for the budget you have, anything higher than 120Hz (Native) is going to be a bit more.

EDIT: I found-

thanks everyone for the comments so far... any opinions on this TV? http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-55LB5900-55-Inch-1080p/dp/B00KVLT08G/ref=zg_bs_172659_3

I dont need smart features, I'll probably just use a chromecast.
