The method is from this book. I started reading it last year. While lots of the book is an explanation of the author's philosophy on tidying, the first half has some pretty decent lifestyle advice. After I read it I learned how to start throwing junk away, removed all of the labels on display in my kitchen and folded my clothes like this. It's not ground-breaking but it's a good read.

The ideal for a bachelor is a relatively spartan lifestyle that behooves a true Political Soldier. His diet should consist of simple, healthy meals (that, contrary to the link, should not entirely omit meat). His living space should be his sanctum, and be kept neat and tidy at all times. His style of dress must be smart and practical.

In terms of lifestyle, men must strive to create an appropriate balance between physicality and intellect. It is inevitable that you will lean more towards one than the other, but each is an equally vital aspect of masculinity and should not be neglected. I lean more towards the pursuits of the mind, and so I chose a very physical, manual career to ensure that my body would be kept fit and well-functioning in spite of my naturally slothful inclinations. Even so, I am currently looking for a squash partner. I spend my spare time developing my knowledge through reading. At the moment, I am engaged in a project of comparative theology. I am studying the Srimad Bhagavatam along with the Jerusalem Bible in an attempt to compare and contrast the archetypically Aryan and the archetypically Hebrew religious "styles".

One should also reserve time for "decompression", in which you engage in nonproductive - but still rewarding - activity. Internet browsing counts towards this. So do video games, chess, and the consumption of art and media. One should be very careful with this, however. It is all to easy to become corrupted by decadent, degenerate influences. I speak from experience.

When the bachelor is ready, he graduates into a husband and father. He should pursue a eugenic marriage with a woman who broadly shares his inclinations. I am fortunate enough to have met such a woman, and we are currently engaged in a romantic relationship. I am likely to propose to her within the next three years.

This really helped me:

This diary, which has several columns across two pages each week. https://boxcleverpress.com/products/family-life-book-diary-in-cover?variant=26210764718180

The columns are meant for different family members but you can use them to divide up sections of your life in any way that helps you. I use the second page to write a things to do list for the week (usually divide tasks into ‘have to be done this week’ and ‘flexible/longer term’. I also add items I need to get at the store on this page. I wfh, so I just keep the diary open in one place and add to it when the thought pops in my head (otherwise I forget)

I use notes on my phone to add things to any of the lists when I can’t get to my diary. This took time and practice to remember the process and get it into a habit. Even remembering to use/consult the diary took months - but now I’ve got used to it, it really helps (have tried diaries many, many times in the past but they never worked - I even gave up on this current system after a few months when it still wasn’t working. Now after a year, it is starting to work so you might need to be persistent to see results.)

I started konmari (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Changing-Magic-Tidying-effective-clutter/dp/0091955106/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1MB00YDK3PPON&keywords=life+changing+magic+of+tidying&qid=1566289767&s=gateway&sprefix=Life+changing+%2Caps%2C165&sr=8-1) which has really helped with my mental load and memory. Now, I can see everything I own in my closets, and it is all organised. So, if I have a special task, I can make a list of sub-tasks and attach it to any related items and put it in my closet. I know I have the main task in my diary to-do list (so I won’t forget to do it) and I can remember the sub-task list (so I won’t forget what needs to be done) because I can now visualise my closet with the items inside. For some reason, if I can see/visualise things, I can remember them much easier. I struggle to visualise paper and lists, but integrating them into my 3d environment this way really helps. It also stops the mental load from anxiety about being disorganised and having that constant feeling like I’m forgetting things and don’t know what they are. I’m only halfway through konmari but it has still made a huge difference. I had to go through a phase of leaving task items out where I knew I would come across them at the time when I needed to do the task (otherwise I would forget) but as I got better at remembering, I’ve been able to keep them put away.

I also use the timer on my phone to remind myself to do certain tasks. I have to encourage myself to be disciplined in stopping whatever I’m doing and going to do the task, but this has been really helpful with learning to get out of being hyperfocused. I use it to remember to get food out of the oven, get my washing out of the machine, to text people if I can’t do so straight away, and so on. It seems so simple its almost not worth mentioning but it has revolutionised things for me and really helped me not forget about things. It’s been great for feeling more confident and in control and less scatterbrained, and these feelings can get you in an upward spiral where they build and help you do better and better.

I also tried bullet journalling - it didn’t work for me but it might for you if you havent tried it.

There is a book which takes an interesting approach to 'decluttering' and letting go of objects which are no longer needed in a positive way. I am fairly new to Buddhism so I can't be sure if anything in the book is in conflict with any teachings, but here is the link if you would like to take a look and decide for yourself whether it might be of use:

An article that summarizes the book pretty well. You can read the novel if you want some motivation to start cleaning.

Tips: Start with the clothes, and in an order from clothes->novels->paperwork->accessories.

The order of the clothes:

Tops (Shirts, sweaters)/
Bottom (Pants, Skirts)/
Hangable stuff(Jacket, suit, coat)/
Socks/
Underwear/
Bags/
Accessories(Scarf, Belt, Hat)/
Shoes

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo is a good read if you're looking for some direction.

I just finished the life changing magic of tidying, which is excellent, and has made an immediate difference.

The Getting Things Done is deservedly famous too.
