I work on computers so don't have much option to not use a mouse all day. I got a vertical mouse and a trackball (and an apple track pad but i hate it) so now i mix up my mouse movement tool swapping between vertical and trackball. works well. I also got a gel wrist support mouse mat and a curved keyboard, all seem to have helped as the aching is gone.
Nothing beats the Logitech M570 thumb trackball mouse imo.

I strongly believe that the best setup is a trackball and track pad. You have precise and detailed control with the right hand and gesture and scrolling with the left hand.
I use the Logitech M570 for a trackball which works well with Mac and Logic X, as you can assign the two buttons to launchpad.
I just use an Apple Magic Trackpad for the left hand.

I've basically been over Logitech since they dropped this planned obsolescence ridden thing.
Avoid the needless price hike & non-removable battery.
Get yourself the M570.
