Great suggestion. I looked at few different styles of concert earplugs. Some of the more popular ones are the "flanged" style but I find those to be very uncomfortable. I ended up trying the Loop earplugs that come with 3 different sizes of smooth, silicone tips as well as the foam Comply tips. I can easily wear them for hours and they nicely reduce the overall volume without making everything sound muffled.

Yep. They’ll sound different and feel different in your ears. The exact details of each will depend on the plug and the shape/size of your ears but the general rule is that foam will be more comfortable but probably block more sound and in a more unbalanced way, while silicone will sound clearer but at the expense of comfort. They’re generally pretty cheap so you can try a few different types and see what you like.
I would also take a look at something like these which are designed specifically for this purpose and try to affect the sound as little as possible.
