Love Cliff. I was reading a book about metal the other day... Louder Than Hell, and it confirmed all of my early impressions of Metallica as they were just starting to get going (the pre RTL years).
According the interviews, Lars couldn't play for shit, Hetfield was a monster on rhythm guitar so Lars played to his rhythm, Mustaine was awesome but a nasty drunk who had to go, and Cliff was the creative heart and chief architect of the songs.
Hetfield & Mustaine wrote the riffs and most lyrics, but Cliff took the riff structures and rearranged them to be melodically EPIC. Hense Four Horsemen, Phantom Lord and Seek and Destroy.
You can feel that much later in ...And Justice For All. The riffs are super heavy and tight, but the almost imperceptible electric spark of genius that Cliff injected is sadly missing...
People blame it on the mixing. I'm here to tell you it's not the mixing. That record thunders... Metallica continues to thunder to this day... but there's no lightning.
