Delayed response, but I actually use a mattress pad from amazon that lays on top of my low quality IKEA mattress, and everyone who has ever sat on/taken a nap in/ etc in that bed agreed that ours is rue most comfortable. Not too firm, not too soft. Feels like a dream.

I have this mattress topper and a super firm mattress. Personally, I feel better whenever the mattress doesn't sink much around me and has some support. That mattress topper is only 3 inches and provides the perfect amount of foam support without you feeling like you're sleeping on a cloud.
