You can buy mattresses at thrift/second-hand stores. You can also get decent foam mattresses relatively inexpensively, especially online. Here is a queen size on amazon.ca for $400 with free shipping. and a thinner one for $300.

Bought it used for $60. I wanted something that was eaasy to transport but still firm. I don't need some massive 12 inch spring mattress but i still wanted a Queen so this is pretty perfect. Plan to throw it on a nice wood platform bed when i can find one.
Can't speak too much on the quality but it feels great so far. We'll see how my back manages (history of lumbar herniated and bulging discs).
I definitely wouldn't ever take the risk with a street mattress because that is just asking for bedbugs. Nowadays you can just order mattresses online with free shipping because modern foam ones can be rolled up for shipping.
