I bought these and they work nicely

But I've also heard several times that unbending a bobby pin and using the rounded end works just fine as well

A pretty decent brush kit is definitely necessary to do a lot of art. I have this one and I really like it. You will also need some dotting tools that will help you create perfect dots. Some striping tape is really handy too. You might also want a stamping kit. Konad has a great one and you can buy it on Amazon.

Have fun!

I sort of got these for free because they perfectly made up the difference I needed to the free shipping, paying for shipping would have cost me more than these. I love them. They're got similar ones just in different colors, too.

Some may say these are girly. I mean come on nail dotting tools? But the are really tools for leather working in disguise! they are the tools you use to transfer patterns on to the leather before hammering the patterns in with steel tools and carving it with sharp knives. How much more manly can you get? Leather, hammering, the skin of a cow, and turning it in to a functional piece of art.

I have this set: $3.50 with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime. They work great! Definitely recommended.

I also got this one from dealextreme.com for $1.40 plus free shipping. Quality's the same as the MASH tool, but you only get one, and it takes forever to ship.

I got these recently and I'm madly in love with them. They were super cheap and shipped quickly. It looks like some of the sizes are the same in the picture, but they're actually not! You definitely see a difference between them on the nail.

As for base coat, I just use the Sally Hansen hardener -- it's the one in the vial-like bottle. It grabs the polish really well. Best part is that it's stopped my nails from breaking at the quick like they used to. It's even holding on a tiny fraction of the nail on my index finger that bent over but didn't break off.

I actually bought these on April 11th and they just came in today.

I bought these specifically for the super free shipping because I also ordered four of these balls for frankening, so now I have 400 tiny metal balls!
