I sometimes run into one of the security guards at my work when I'm out for a smoke. For some reason, we have discussions about racism about 40% of the time we see each other. I'm a white lady, he's a black man.
Last week, he sits next to me and goes on about how stupid people are. I agree in general and ask him what he's het up about. He shows me an email on his phone where people in his church are upset about a toy called Sing-A-Ma-Jig, saying it's a racist name. I didn't really get it until he said "You know, like jig-a-boo." I said it sounded to me like a take on thing-a-ma-jig. He said it sounded the same to him and he didn't like how his church was making a big deal out of what was really absolutely nothing.
Until I had that discussion with him, I had no idea jig-a-boo was a racist thing.
