Advice for you: Stay in contact with your U.S. college friends while you are away. Yes, you'll meet tons of fun people out there and be busy experiencing Spain, but take the time to sent post-cards, e-mails, and other forms of communication. I've had a few friends who just drop off the face of the earth for a semester abroad and it is sort of sad, because you feel like they've forgotten about you. A simple post-card really makes a difference.
Advice for Freshman: join clubs and become active on campus. Most schools offer so many cool services, and these are also great ways to make friends and try new things. I jumped into two clubs right away and have made life-long friends from them. It took me until my senior year to realize there were so many other services though - like free movie screenings, resume/career seminars, dances, exercise groups, etc. Take advantage of these wonderful - usually free - services while you can.
