Have you looked at this Microsoft Surface Laptop? It is very attractive, has an astounding 14 hours battery life, excellent display and of course, with a sleek, thin and sturdy chassis, durability and portability will be of no issue to you..It weighs only 2.9 pounds and does have a very good touchpad and keyboard.. With the new 7th gen i7 processor, 8 GB RAM and fast SSD, you can be certain it will complete the job for you..It is perfect for watching movies, surfing the internet, taking notes etc.
I would mirror Haeges suggestion. The Gigabyte is an excellent option - same with the Razer Blade 14 that you mentioned earlier.
I know the Razer Blade has pretty good build quality, and has gotten rave reviews around the internet. I know far less about the Gigabyte Aero 14 so I would do a bit of research before purchasing.
The power on the above two is probably more than you'll need though. Both will be immensely more powerful than the PC's you have in your school. I do think they are your best options and would work extremely well for years to come. Realistically though, you could get by with much less. You could look into something like the Dell XPS 13. Look into a model with intel Iris Pro graphics, which are quite a bit better than most integrated graphics and should work very well for CAD. A final suggestion is the similar Microsoft Surface Laptop for $1600 which also has intel Iris 640 graphics.
Slightly over budget, but the first gen Surface Laptop would be a perfect fit.
