I struggled a lot trying to play video games when I was first having serious trouble with my hands. I don't know your genre of choice but mine have always been MMOs and turn-based strategy. I agree with /u/SixJointsOfPain that once you're on some sort of DMARD you will likely feel better soon, but until you do here are some of my favorite ways to ease hand stress while gaming with arthritis.

  • Compression gloves. They can help keep swelling at bay (and keep heat in during these wintery months) and ease some of the pain of swollen knuckles.
  • Ergonomic keyboard/mouse/controller. If you play anything on a system they make Monster Hunter for, try searching specifically branded ones like this. People who spend hours at a time hunting monsters on their handhelds are serious about hand comfort, I guess.
  • Breaks to stretch. Not always the easiest if you're playing something fast-paced, but people can be surprisingly considerate if you're like "hold up a sec, medical stuff". I heal a lot in WoW and 99% of players will just let it go at that or after a quick "what's wrong?" "oh I have arthritis in my hands, just needed to stretch. We're good now!" or whatever. You're (presumably?) a grown-up; you do you. ;)
  • Playing easier, slower-paced games. This can suck when all your friends are playing Overwatch but like... The Sims 4 is pretty neat. And Animal Crossing and Pokemon never really get old, do they? :)
  • Find new ways to enjoy the games you love. I personally collect dolls and figures so one of my non-gaming hobbies is posing and photographing my Link figma in all sorts of silly ways and places. Papercraft is also really cool-- and I believe there is software to convert game models straight into papercraft projects.

I hope this was at all helpful and not just a lot of reading for no payoff. :x I also hope you feel better soon. When I quit WoW four years ago I thought I would never be back but I'm literally logged in right now on my healer in the window behind the one I'm typing this comment in. Modern medicine is amazing.
If you want someone understanding to commiserate with on bnet (I think I saw some Overwatch in your post history lol) I'm eiridel#1620. This goes for anyone who reads this comment, but please just let me know who you are when you friend me lmao

If you are ok with spending money this Grip might be an interesting solution

u/ArianrhodSC · 7 pointsr/MonsterHunter

I had that. I tried 3 grips and this one worked best for me. Life changing, I can play for hours on a plane with no discomfort.

I'd recommend abandoning the CPP for this if if fits your model: https://www.amazon.com/3DS-Monster-Hunter-Extended-slide-Nintendo/dp/B00LVRXS8C

u/jake_kulp · 6 pointsr/MonsterHunter

I just got the MHX Grip. Basically the same thing minus the stand. AMA. I can include pictures!

EDIT: I also own this grip if anyone happens to be interested in my experience with that.

u/asyrin25 · 5 pointsr/3DS

There's also some great 3ds grips. I'm partial to my Monster Hunter Cross but it's stupid expensive and there's a lot of other options out there for much less that are also more packing friendly. Check Amazon for quick delivery!

u/brokenskullzero · 5 pointsr/MonsterHunter

its just a problem with the 3ds originally not having any "right stick" if nintendo designed the 3ds to have dual circle pads, it would be one of the best gaming experiences

on mine, I use this along with the psp cap mod

https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-gear-Nintendo/dp/B016XCSBC2

Feels good for medium and large hands and makes the shoulders feel like the dual shock 2 r2/l2. though only for New 3ds XL models

this too

u/smokeyjoey8 · 5 pointsr/3DS

I have the Monster Hunter Generations N3DSXL grip.

It's big, but comfortable. My only problem with it is that one of the shoulder buttons doesn't feel very responsive, but it still works. Mine was $40, and I feel like it was worth it, especially if you play Monster Hunter. If you have the money and you're looking for a big, comfy grip, you can't go wrong with this one.

Ye need one of these. There’s a lot of grip things out there, but I’ve found this one to be the best/most comfortable. Specially if you’ve got big hands

u/EpicBomberMan · 4 pointsr/3DS

Are there any cheap (at most $30) grips for the N3DSXL like this one? I want one with the shoulder buttons set up like this, but I don't want to spend $60+ on it.

u/ertaboy356b · 4 pointsr/MonsterHunter

I got this locally from where I live but I saw one from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452958910&sr=8-1&keywords=monster+hunter+x+grip

Edit: Just saw the price and HOLY SHIT, it's 3.5 more expensive from where I live. I got mine for $18.

u/THE_NEWEST_3DS · 3 pointsr/3DS

I just got the Monster Hunter X grip and honestly, it's the best that is available. It's expensive, but worth it if you want triggers.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016XCSBC2?keywords=monster%20hunter%20x%20grip&qid=1452482188&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

u/TheRadGasm · 3 pointsr/3DS

I was having a lot of problems with circle pad slipperiness, so I invested in these: Cyber Premium Slidepad Cover. It just sticks to your OEM circle pad with a little bit of double-sided tape. Also five stars.

As a bonus, I'm using the Monster Hunter Cross Hunting Gear grip. It's really outstanding for avoiding Fantasy Life and Kid Icarus Uprising cramps.

u/SeishunDash · 3 pointsr/3DS

I purchased it retail in Hong Kong for ~23.50 USD (180 HKD). I just checked Amazon... they charge around 45 USD.. wow.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/3DS

He said that. Either way, isn't that for the larger version which Nintendo never released in the west? Amazon has it but it's a bit pricey. http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452018451&sr=8-1&keywords=monster+hunter+cross+hunting+gear

u/Myth3842 · 3 pointsr/MonsterHunter

Too bad they're chunky, doesn't make them exactly portable.

If only this did not cost an arm I would of bought one long time ago.

u/gladyskravitz · 3 pointsr/3DS

Yeah, I had a hard time with the price, but I was so disappointed with the other ones.

And I justified it by telling myself it's less than half the price of the monster Hunter grip!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fOVfAbHBA4K1Y

u/leenponyd42 · 2 pointsr/MonsterHunter

You can buy the MHX version without the stand on amazon.

u/Frakshaw · 2 pointsr/MonsterHunter

Oh shit

I think I'll just wait for the MHXX one

u/2shovel2knight · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

Check amazon, they sell these third party attachments that look kinda like the Switch Joy-con holder that give the system some girth. One of them is Monster Hunter branded, so you know it's meant for extended play sessions :)

Edit: Now with link.

u/Khirsah01 · 2 pointsr/MonsterHunter

There's also different grips for the New 3DS XL (and a few for the New 3DS). Take a look at those grips and see what may work for you.

I use the Cyber Gadget N3DSXL Grip V2 for my MH4U N3DSXL system and so far it's the best one I've had, I had the V1 Grip, but it was difficult to reach the shoulder buttons where they put the trigger rests on the V1. The V2 design changed that by moving the trigger rests down more so it's easier to let your middle finger rest on the trigger without blocking your index fingers from the shoulder buttons. There's also a V3 design that's very different, but I haven't tried that although I'd like to get one at some point to try it out.

If I attempt to play my N3DSXL or N3DS without the grip, I can actually dislocate my wrists and fingers from trying to hold the system (health issue causing loose joints). Without the grip, I'd be stuck with turn based games and having to poke at the system as it would be laying on a table.

It's 40 bucks on amazon now. Ships from Japan so it will take awhile unless you pay more.

u/CaffinatedOne · 2 pointsr/3DS

I had to find it

Play Asia
Seems to be out of stock until June

Amazon In stock, but massively marked up by the reseller.

I've been using it for awhile and it's been great. It's solidly built, comfortable, and the triggers are useful.

The reviews are accurate that it's really bulky though, so it's not going in a pocket or anything. When I travel, I carry it in my work bag, so it's no big deal, but that's about the only big downside that I've seen.

Hi there, you got me really interested in this. I live in Japan so I can probably just go down the street and find this tomorrow, but can you tell me the maker of the one you are using? Is it Hori? I found this link on Amazon Japan and was wondering if the pictures match the one you have...

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/aw/d/B016XCSBC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1452004537&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=monster+hunter+x

u/nabit22 · 1 pointr/MonsterHunter

I have used both the 2 ds and new 3ds extensively. It is much less crapped but you dont have the extra camera stick ( which i actually dont use.) Has slower loading times, and a smaller battery life. You have to be careful with your screens though probably pick up a protective carrying case to protect the two screens as this is why mine is dead. Your other and probably cheaper option is to buy a the monster hunter controller attachment thing for your existing ds.

This thing here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016XCSBC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?qid=1453523963&sr=1-12&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=monster+hunter

Or something similar

u/I_Dark_Samus_l · 1 pointr/MonsterHunter

where can i buy it / pre-order ?

i already have this

so what is the difference between MHX grip and MHXX Grip ?

u/Spaz_Mah_Tazz · 1 pointr/3dshacks

That one looks good, kinda like an xbox controller.

You should see what this guy did. As an owner of a pair of Bluetooth headphones I envy his set up:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B016XCSBC2/R33DZ7GQVLSFES/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_rvw_1?ie=UTF8&cursor=1

u/BadEugoogolizer · 1 pointr/3DS

This one?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016XCSBC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1464747217&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=monster+hunter+grip&dpPl=1&dpID=61rl6gLGhTL&ref=plSrch

It's ridiculously overpriced from the Amazon 3rd party sellers, but amiami has it's second shipment for pre-order still, I think. I have one on order from them, myself.

u/garasensei · 1 pointr/3DS

Some additional items you may find interesting. Each item adds $2-5 in shipping depending on the weight but still comes out cheaper than most import sites.

Hopefully the Switch will have Virtual Console options that make sense, and that would be the obvious suggestion.

If a portable would interest him, then a New 3DS XL with the Hori Monster Hunter Grip-- only way to play the 3DS comfortably with man-sized hands. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016XCSBC2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would expect eBay to have some used WiiU deals in March. But I would also recommend the Wii U Pro controller for hand comfort.

Lastly, an old Wii can be found for $50 on eBay. It would take years to exhaust the Virtual Console games (Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Wii), but who knows how long they'll be supported.

u/Zacharuni · 1 pointr/gameswap

Sure. Looking over your collection it seems like this might interest you as well? Can add pictures of that as well should you like.

I have interest in:

[Kingdom Hearts III]

[Katamari Demacy Reroll]

[Danganronpa 1 2 Reload]

[Odin Sphere]

[Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee Pokeball Bundle] <-- All I really want is the pokeball?

The Cybergrip /u/Whirlspell posted is good. I have that and the MHX one. The Cybergrip holds the 3DS a lot more steady. I found the MHX isn't a perfectly snug fit. However, the MHX one is much more comfortable. It's hard plastic, but fits the hand a whole lot better.

u/tonyjin · 1 pointr/3DS

Could try the brand new Cyber Gadget slim grip: https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Gadget-Rubber-Coating-Black-Nintendo/dp/B01KWUNRV6/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

I'm currently deciding between that one, the monster hunter one (https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-gear-Nintendo/dp/B016XCSBC2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1481064584&sr=1-1&keywords=3ds+xl+monster+hunter+grip), and the wider cyber gadget one (https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Gadget-Rubber-Coating-Black-Nintendo/dp/B013JDH8J0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1481064457&sr=1-1&keywords=cyber+grip+3ds+xl). I bought all 3, going to return 2 of them. So far I'm probably sticking with the monster hunter one since I have large hands, but I wish I could stay with the new slim grip since it's super compact and can hold two games in the back.

u/pramzam · 1 pointr/MonsterHunter

This works just fine with new 3DS XL.

u/SonicUndergroun · 1 pointr/Games

May I ask what it is that makes it uncomfortable? If it is the system itself, I don't know which model you play on, but if it is the New 3DS Xl there is an awesome (if pricey) grip that makes it much more comfortable, at least for me!

u/Jaximus_Decimus · 1 pointr/3DS

The grip you linked specifically says it will not fit the New 3ds. There is a MH grip that will fit the N3DS, but it's currently going for an absurd price: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B016XCSBC2

u/OnePeace12 · 1 pointr/3DS

I've found this which seems to be of questionable quality, but accomplishes exactly what I need from the triggers with my small hands:

http://www.amazon.com/GAMETECH-XL-Trigger-Black-new-3DS/dp/B00SGWGBSE

Apparently this model does the same thing and is of much better quality, but is at a ludicrous price now:

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Cross-hunting-Nintendo-3DS/dp/B016XCSBC2

u/cylindrical418 · 1 pointr/MonsterHunter

I personally have tried one of these although I've heard it's very hard to get one these days. I only own an old 3DS and I use this all the time and it feels great.

u/argoncrystals · 1 pointr/MonsterHunter

I love using my New 3DS XL, don't think I could use any other 3DS model at this point. Though that's largely due to the fact that I replaced the c-stick with a PSP cap and use this grip.

u/Dark-e- · 1 pointr/3DS

This changed everything for me.

u/allysonoa · 1 pointr/3DS

I had the same issues, plus it had a funky rubbery smell that I didn't like. I ended up only using it for about a week before I bought this one. I like it a lot better gripwise, but it's not as protective as the dreamgear.

u/da_frenzy · 0 pointsr/3DS

Only issue with that one is its now $70+ on amazon and ebay... http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016XCSBC2?
